Organizational Context
The UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) was established by the UN General Assembly to support peace, arms limitation, and disarmament initiatives in the African region. Based in Lomé, Togo, UNREC collaborates with the African Union and coordinates regional activities. A communication unit is in place to enhance the center's visibility and institutional communication, deploying necessary tools to achieve its objectives.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer (VNU) Web Designer will support UNREC's communication unit by editing documents, visuals, and communication materials. This role involves understanding design requirements, developing design concepts, and creating visually appealing content aligned with UN branding guidelines. The objective is to enhance UNREC's online presence and institutional communication, contributing to the center's mandate of promoting peace and disarmament in Africa through effective visual communication and web design.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Director and supervision of the Political Affairs Officer, the Web Designer will assist in editing UNREC's documents, visuals, and communication materials. Key duties include gathering information on context, target audience, and branding; developing design concepts and discussing them with the focal point; and creating designs according to agreed requirements. The role involves developing a Drupal environment for the current website, proposing a new design aligned with UN graphic standards, and supporting the center with web development tools and languages (PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JQuery, Adobe Suite). Responsibilities also include understanding the existing web platform, consulting with the IT team on website redesign needs, and creating a comprehensive website update plan with reports and mockups.
Work Experience
Professional experience in Marketing, Public Relations, and Communication is required. Proficiency in design software (CAD, visual 2D/3D) and web tools (workflow management) is necessary. Technical skills in HTML and a good understanding of design concepts are essential for this role.
