Organizational Context
The Abidjan Convention, hosted by UNEP, is a regional agreement for 22 African nations focused on protecting and sustainably managing marine and coastal environments. It addresses critical issues like climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, which are vital for fisheries and livelihoods. The Convention facilitates cooperation, policy strengthening, and practical solutions through its protocols, working with governments and partners to safeguard these essential ecosystems.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports the Abidjan Convention Secretariat in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, focusing on coastal resilience and marine spatial planning (MSP). The UN Volunteer will join a multidisciplinary team, engaging with regional environmental governance, high-level stakeholders, and programme coordination. The role involves supporting transboundary initiatives between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana for ecosystem management and climate adaptation, as well as advancing the regional agenda on marine pollution and plastic action planning. Additionally, the volunteer will contribute to analytical work on coastal lagoons like Lagune Ebrié, developing solutions for restoration and sustainable management.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support the Abidjan Convention's work programme and ongoing projects, including coastal resilience and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. Tasks involve monitoring project delivery, tracking progress, and supporting donor reporting, particularly for initiatives related to hazardous waste management and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The role includes collecting and analyzing data on coastal ecosystems, pollution, and climate risks to inform programme activities and project design. The volunteer will assist in drafting technical outputs such as reports and concept notes, and help organize regional workshops and meetings. Developing communication materials and coordinating with Contracting Parties, UN agencies, and partners to follow up on actions are also key responsibilities.
Work Experience
While only one month of experience is formally required, candidates with up to three years of demonstrated interest or experience in climate change, environmental management, sustainable development, coastal/marine ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, or project design are preferred. Experience in research, data compilation, analysis, and report drafting, along with strong communication and teamwork skills, is also beneficial.
