Job Purpose
The Gender and Climate Change Specialist will contribute to the elaboration and implementation of Mali's National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process. This role involves integrating gender perspectives into climate change adaptation strategies, ensuring that the needs of women, men, youth, and vulnerable groups are considered. The specialist will support the revision of the existing NAP, assist in developing gender-sensitive sectoral adaptation plans, and strengthen institutional capacities for gender mainstreaming in climate policies. The objective is to enhance Mali's resilience to climate change by promoting inclusive and evidence-based adaptation planning and financing.
Responsibilities
The Gender and Climate Change Specialist will be responsible for implementing the gender action plan within the NAP project. Key duties include: Integrating Gender into NAP Revision: Support analysis of gender gaps in the current NAP, ensure adaptation priorities address differentiated needs, and contribute to a gender-sensitive revised NAP aligned with national and international commitments. Supporting Sectoral Adaptation Plans: Participate in formulating sectoral plans (agriculture, energy, health, water) with a gender perspective, propose gender indicators for monitoring adaptation measures, and ensure coherence with national gender equality policies. Strengthening Institutional Capacities: Develop practical tools for integrating gender into climate policy planning and implementation, support inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms on gender and adaptation, and contribute to educational and communication materials. Supporting Inclusive Consultations: Ensure active participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in consultations, document their contributions, and promote participatory approaches. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Knowledge Management: Contribute to a gender-sensitive monitoring framework, participate in collecting and analyzing sex-disaggregated data, document best practices, and support the preparation of gender-sensitive reports and case studies.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of relevant professional experience. This includes proven understanding of gender and sustainable development issues, with at least 2 years of practical experience in gender mainstreaming, women's empowerment, and sustainable development. Experience with gender issues in the specific country/region is essential. Prior collaboration with UN projects, capacity building with a gender focus, and project development/results-based management experience are highly desirable. Excellent analytical, writing, advocacy, presentation, and communication skills are required.
