Biodiversity Investment Facility (BIF) Analyst
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works globally to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality, focusing on sustainable development, democratic governance, and climate resilience. In South Africa, the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), led by UNDP, supports the mobilization of resources for conservation. BIOFIN is currently providing technical assistance to the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) to establish a Biodiversity Investment Facility (BIF). This facility aims to mobilize capital for biodiversity and climate-resilient investments, engaging a complex network of government, private sector, and civil society stakeholders.
Job Purpose
This role supports the design, operationalization, fundraising, and implementation of the Biodiversity Investment Facility (BIF) at the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). The UNV will provide crucial technical, financial, and program management support to the DBSA Climate and Nature Finance team. The objective is to contribute to the development and scaling of this new blended finance platform, which aims to mobilize and deploy capital for biodiversity, climate-resilient, and nature-based investments across South Africa and the broader African region. The role is integral to safeguarding ecological infrastructure, addressing nature-related risks, and unlocking private sector investment in nature-positive outcomes.
Responsibilities
The UNV will provide support across several key areas. This includes assisting in the refinement of the Biodiversity Investment Facility (BIF) structure and financial instruments, and developing investment criteria and governance frameworks. The role involves identifying and developing a pipeline of biodiversity projects, including supporting feasibility studies and financial modeling. Furthermore, the UNV will contribute to fundraising efforts by preparing funding proposals and investor materials, and engaging with donors and development partners. Responsibilities also extend to program management, tracking implementation progress and KPIs, coordinating stakeholders, and maintaining communication with the UNDP BIOFIN team. Finally, the UNV will contribute to knowledge management by developing thought leadership and reports.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of relevant experience is required, with a strong focus on climate, nature, and biodiversity finance. Experience in resource mobilization, program and implementation management, and project pipeline development is essential. The role also requires experience working with international and national institutions or development finance institutions. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with database management are expected. Candidates with five years of experience in these areas may also be considered.
