Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in 170 countries to eradicate poverty and protect the planet. In Angola, the Country Office implements a Country Programme (2020-2022) focused on 'leaving no one behind,' addressing poverty, resilience, and inclusive democracy. UNDP Angola mobilizes resources for biodiversity, renewable energy, climate change, and disaster risk reduction. Angola offers a dynamic context for peacebuilding, governance, and inclusive development, playing a regional leadership role while facing national challenges in political inclusion, youth unemployment, gender inequality, and climate shocks.
Job Purpose
Angola presents a dynamic environment for peacebuilding, governance, and inclusive development, demonstrating regional leadership in peace and security while navigating national challenges like political inclusion, youth engagement, gender inequality, and climate-related vulnerabilities. UNDP Angola is expanding its conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts through integrated approaches linking governance, gender equality, youth engagement, and climate resilience, focusing on inclusive participation. This assignment offers a unique opportunity for the UN Volunteer to contribute to UNDP's work at the nexus of peacebuilding and development. The role involves gaining practical experience in programme design, stakeholder engagement, and policy support, collaborating with government, civil society, and UN partners to advance inclusive and resilient development aligned with Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda. The assignment, supported by the Republic of Korea, emphasizes structured mentoring, knowledge exchange, and professional development within a UNDP country office, contributing to Angola's national development priorities.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support the design, implementation, and monitoring of peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and inclusive governance programmes, aligning with UNDP CPD 2024-2028 priorities. This includes integrating gender equality and Women, Peace and Security (UNSCR 1325) principles across activities, supporting national action plans and gender-responsive policies. The role involves assisting in strengthening youth engagement and civic participation, particularly initiatives promoting political inclusion ahead of the 2027 elections. Technical and coordination support will be provided for stakeholder engagement with government, civil society, youth, women’s groups, and development partners. The volunteer will contribute to developing analytical products, policy briefs, and knowledge products on peacebuilding, governance, and social cohesion, and integrate disaster risk reduction and climate resilience into programming. Assistance will be provided in organizing workshops, consultations, and dialogues to foster inclusive decision-making and social cohesion. Furthermore, the volunteer will support monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of programme activities, including results tracking, documentation of lessons learned, and best practices. Contributions to resource mobilization efforts, such as preparing concept notes and project proposals, are also expected. Finally, the role promotes volunteerism and supports UNV visibility initiatives within UNDP Angola.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required in peacebuilding and conflict prevention, democratic governance and political participation, gender equality and Women, Peace and Security (WPS), youth engagement and civic participation, programme/project management in development contexts, and stakeholder coordination and partnerships. Experience in Africa or similar contexts is considered an asset.
Skills
Required competencies include accountability, adaptability, commitment to continuous learning, communication, creativity, ethics and values, integrity, judgment, knowledge sharing, professionalism, planning and organizing, respect for diversity, self-management, technological awareness, and teamwork. Technical skills encompass strong analytical and research abilities, excellent drafting and communication, capacity to work with diverse stakeholders, project coordination, knowledge of gender mainstreaming, and results-based management and reporting. Expertise areas include community development, crisis and emergency response, and elections and governance.
