The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), established in 1965, is the UN's global development network operating in nearly 170 countries. Its mission is to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and build resilience. The Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) serves as UNDP's primary knowledge and advisory center for the Europe and Central Asia region. This initiative supports a network for women experts in climate transparency across francophone and lusophone African developing countries, fostering knowledge exchange and leadership.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports the launch of a dedicated network for women experts in climate transparency across francophone and lusophone African developing countries. The virtual kick-off meeting aims to create an informal space for knowledge exchange and peer learning, bringing regional experts together to share insights and strengthen women's leadership in environmental governance. Online Volunteers are crucial for ensuring smooth, multilingual communication, bridging language barriers, enabling equal participation, and integrating diverse regional perspectives into the global climate transparency dialogue, serving as a foundation for a sustainable community of practice.
Responsibilities
Provide high-quality simultaneous interpretation during a 1.5-hour virtual meeting, either from French to English or Portuguese to English. Review meeting agendas, briefing notes, and technical climate transparency terminology in advance to ensure accurate translation. Collaborate with the project team and fellow interpreters for seamless coordination during the live event. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all meeting discussions and shared materials. Ensure a stable internet connection, functioning headset, and a quiet working environment during the scheduled meeting time.
Work Experience
Proven experience in providing simultaneous interpretation in virtual formats (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx). Strong familiarity with environmental terminology, climate change mechanisms, or climate transparency frameworks is required. Excellent active listening, verbal communication, and quick-synthesis skills are essential.
Skills
Fluent or native-level proficiency in English and either French or Portuguese. Commitment to gender equality, women's empowerment, and inclusive sustainable development. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, virtual environment. High degree of reliability, punctuality, and organizational skills. Access to a reliable internet connection and a quality headset.
