Reporting and Communication Officer
Organizational Context
The UN Human Rights Regional Office for West Africa (OHCHR/WARO), based in Dakar, Senegal, is the primary UN agency for promoting and protecting human rights in the region. Operational since 2008, it assists governments in implementing international human rights standards through expertise and training. The office also supports National Human Rights Institutions and civil society, and works on projects like PROMIS, which strengthens West African states' human rights-based responses to migrant smuggling and related violations.
Job Purpose
This National UN Volunteer position supports the OHCHR Regional Office for West Africa (OHCHR/WARO) and its PROMIS project, which focuses on protecting migrants' rights and enhancing regional capacities to address irregular migration. The role is crucial for improving the project's visibility through enhanced reporting and communication. The incumbent will report to the Project Coordinator and the Regional Representative, contributing to the effective implementation and communication of human rights initiatives related to migration in West Africa.
Responsibilities
The Reporting and Communication Officer will prepare diverse donor and human rights situation reports, ensuring compliance with established standards. Key duties include drafting, reviewing, and editing periodic reports on human rights, with a focus on migrants' rights, and contributing to donor reports using provided data. The role involves creating briefing notes and background materials for meetings on migration issues. The officer will also integrate gender perspectives into activities, maintain databases, and develop and implement a communication strategy for the PROMIS Project. Enhancing project visibility through multimedia content, social media, and communication products is essential. Additionally, the role includes supporting liaison with advocacy partners, civil society, and governments, and evaluating communication activity impact.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in communications and reporting is required. Experience in drafting human rights analytical reports, community engagement in Senegal using Wolof, organizing public events, and using social media for visibility is essential. Familiarity with UN system or OHCHR is also required. Experience with migration issues in West Africa is desirable.
Skills
Key competencies include creativity, planning and organizing, and professionalism. Strong communication skills are essential, along with excellent reporting abilities and experience in drafting analytical reports. Proficiency in computer office software packages and graphic design knowledge is required. Experience with social networks and enhancing online visibility is also necessary.
