Community Lead - Enterprise Development
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network supporting countries in achieving sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals. In Zambia, UNDP focuses on enhancing local economies, particularly in Livingstone, the tourism capital. This initiative aims to empower youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by diversifying tourism offerings and strengthening local value chains to foster sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience.
Job Purpose
This role supports micro and small businesses in Livingstone, Zambia, by providing direct mentorship, operational training, and strategic capability-building. The Community Lead will implement the "In Motion Methodology" through group trainings and on-site technical assistance to enhance economic resilience, increase competitiveness, and improve market stability for youth-led MSMEs. The objective is to help these enterprises compete in larger markets, meet international standards, and contribute to the diversification and growth of Livingstone's economy, solidifying its status as a premier multi-faceted destination.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the UNDP Project Manager, the Community Lead will deliver group trainings using the "In Motion Methodology" and provide specialized on-site technical assistance to micro, small, and medium business owners. Responsibilities include participating in weekly Management Team meetings to report on methodology implementation progress, processing surveyed information, and preparing status reports according to UNDP specifications. The role also involves supporting enterprise innovation and renovation in coordination with beneficiaries and the Management Team, including defining and delivering necessary equipment. Additionally, the Community Lead will coordinate strategic marketing actions with the Project Team's Graphic Designer.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required. However, experience as a consultant or coach in business management, continuous improvement, and advisory services to micro and small businesses is desirable. Experience in retail commerce, sales, inventory, basic management, finance, or legal-commercial advice, along with knowledge of Zambian MSME dynamics and completion of "In Motion Training," are advantageous. Certifications in value chain methodologies are a plus.
Skills
Demonstrated commitment to UNDP's mission, values, and highest standards of integrity. Possesses sensitivity and adaptability to cultural diversity. Functional competencies include advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, web applications), ability to deliver under tight deadlines, excellent communication and facilitation skills, capacity for gender mainstreaming, and strong research and analytical skills. Expertise in business management, development programmes, and economics/finance is expected.
