Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), established in 1958, is one of the UN's five regional commissions. Its mandate is to foster economic and social development, regional integration, and international cooperation for Africa's development. Comprising 54 member states, ECA acts as a regional UN arm and a key part of the African institutional landscape, contributing to addressing continental development challenges. Its strategic objective is to drive ideas and actions for an empowered, inclusive, and transformed Africa, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.
Job Purpose
This assignment focuses on providing essential formatting, design, and publication services for ECA Rwanda. The volunteer will be responsible for transforming a document into a polished, print-ready publication. This includes meticulous formatting of text, figures, tables, and annexes to ensure consistency and alignment with the table of contents. The role also involves enhancing the report's readability through the integration of design elements and the creation of a compelling cover page. A key output will be a visually engaging infographic summarizing the report's main elements. The ultimate goal is to deliver a high-quality, professionally designed final file suitable for submission, supporting ECA's communication and dissemination efforts.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the ECA project officer, the volunteer will undertake several key tasks. This includes formatting the document, ensuring all figures, tables, and annexes are correctly aligned with the table of contents, and standardizing all tables for consistency. The volunteer will also integrate design elements to improve the report's visual appeal and readability. A significant responsibility is the development of a single infographic that encapsulates the report's core messages. Additionally, the volunteer will create an appropriate cover page and finalize the entire document into a print-ready file for submission. This role requires close collaboration and responsiveness to feedback.
Work Experience
Required experience includes strong skills in infographic and presentation design, proficiency with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, or Canva, and experience in professional PowerPoint development. The ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively in English is essential. Desirable experience includes familiarity with international development topics and prior work with UN agencies or development organizations.
Skills
Key skills required are proficiency in graphic design software (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, or equivalent), expertise in infographic and presentation design, and professional PowerPoint development. Excellent English communication skills are mandatory. The volunteer must be responsive to feedback, able to work collaboratively, and capable of independent work to meet deadlines. Familiarity with international development topics and experience with UN agencies are considered advantageous.
