Job Purpose
This role supports UNICEF Mexico's efforts to integrate environmental sustainability and climate change perspectives into its programming. The assignment aims to address the disproportionate impact of climate change and environmental degradation on children and adolescents in Mexico, exacerbating issues like food insecurity, water scarcity, and disease. The volunteer will contribute to ensuring that UNICEF's actions align with the new Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (SCAP) and support strategies for climate justice, youth empowerment, and building resilient protection systems for children facing climate-related risks. The goal is to enhance the meaningful participation of children and youth in climate and environmental decision-making.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will coordinate programmatic actions related to environment and climate change for UNICEF Mexico, ensuring alignment with the SCAP. This includes developing an integrated narrative, organizing interventions, and leading a task force. The role involves providing technical advice to integrate climate and environmental perspectives into programming, coordinating with program managers and transversal area leaders. The volunteer will support strengthening climate and environmental governance sensitive to children's needs, coordinating with government, civil society, UN agencies, and the private sector. Key tasks include supporting climate justice strategies, enhancing youth empowerment and participation in climate and environmental issues, and strengthening child protection systems against climate impacts. The role also involves data collection, analysis, documentation for reporting, building partnerships, and managing administrative aspects of interventions.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in fields such as Engineering, Agronomy, Environment, Biology, Climate Change, Law, or Environmental Health. Experience in managing and monitoring development cooperation projects or emergency response is required. Experience in gender equality and integrating gender perspectives into climate action, including analyzing differentiated impacts on children and women, is a strong advantage. Experience in inter-sectoral coordination and collaboration with government, local authorities, international organizations, and NGOs is desirable. Prior experience within the UN system or with NGOs is a plus.
