Organizational Context
UNICEF, established in 1946, is an international humanitarian agency for children, operating in over 192 countries across health, education, water, sanitation, child protection, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, and social policy. In Cameroon since 1975, UNICEF focuses on education, water, sanitation, child protection, and HIV/AIDS, advocating for favorable policies and strengthening stakeholder capacities. The Child Protection Programme aims to protect children, especially girls in vulnerable areas, from violence and exploitation, reinforcing government and community systems.
Job Purpose
This National UN Volunteer position supports UNICEF Cameroon's "I Am Music" initiative, aimed at strengthening protective and inclusive learning environments for children and adolescents both in and out of school. Inspired by the El Sistema methodology, the programme uses music and arts education to foster psychosocial well-being, social cohesion, inclusion, and child development. The role is crucial for scaling up the initiative nationwide, ensuring strong integration of child safeguarding measures, including Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), child rights, and inclusive education principles. The volunteer will contribute to programme coordination, implementation, monitoring, training, and reporting.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will coordinate and support the implementation and scale-up of the "I Am Music" programme, ensuring alignment with UNICEF's strategic priorities. Responsibilities include monitoring activities, promoting the inclusion of vulnerable children (out-of-school, disabled, displaced, refugee, teenage mothers), and strengthening safe, inclusive learning environments. The role involves supporting training for teachers and facilitators on child rights, PSEA, music pedagogy, and inclusive approaches, and ensuring adherence to safeguarding standards. Additionally, the volunteer will conduct monitoring visits, support data collection and reporting, document best practices, and engage with communities and stakeholders to foster programme ownership and collaboration.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of relevant experience, including demonstrated interest or experience in music, partner management, coordination, protective learning environments, and PSEA. Proficiency in computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is necessary. Experience as a volunteer or in a different cultural context is highly regarded.
Skills
Key skills include administration, arts and design, communication, community development, development programmes, education, and social work. A working knowledge of English is required.
