Job Purpose
This role supports the OHCHR Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) by assisting with research on human rights violations. The volunteer will conduct open-source research on assigned topics or incidents, utilizing publicly available information to prepare concise weekly summaries of key findings, trends, and sources. This assignment provides a valuable opportunity to enhance skills in human rights monitoring and analysis through close collaboration with legal reporting officers, desk officers, thematic advisors, and the Public Information Officer. The work contributes directly to the office's mandate of identifying, analyzing, and addressing emerging human rights challenges in the region.
Responsibilities
Conduct open-source research on assigned human rights topics or incidents using publicly available information. Prepare short weekly summaries (1-2 pages) highlighting key findings, trends, and sources. Collaborate closely with legal reporting officers, desk officers, thematic advisors, and the Public Information Officer. Contribute to the monitoring and analysis of the human rights situation in the region. Support the implementation of planned projects and activities related to human rights monitoring and reporting. Assist in gathering and synthesizing large volumes of information from various sources, including social media feeds and open-source platforms.
Work Experience
Experience in human rights, humanitarian affairs, and crisis management is desirable. Experience analyzing social media feeds and other open-source platforms for information gathering is beneficial. Proficiency in qualitative research methods and data analysis, including summarizing and synthesizing information, is required. Familiarity with creating data visualizations is an asset.
Skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with keen attention to detail. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing priorities. Persistence, self-management, and the ability to work under pressure are essential.
