Organizational Context
The World Health Organization (WHO) is the UN's global public health authority, established in 1948. WHO Vietnam, a Member State since 1950, has supported the country's health sector since the war's end. The WHO Country Office in Hanoi works with the government to achieve universal health coverage, addressing challenges of a transitioning middle-income status. This assignment supports the Healthy Lifestyles and Environment (HLE) Team, aligning with the UN's 'Delivering as One' initiative.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment supports WHO Vietnam's Healthy Lifestyles and Environment (HLE) Team, focusing on strategic communication and prevention-oriented policies. The role contributes to preventing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), promoting healthy lifestyles, and strengthening health systems. The volunteer will assist in coordinating with partners, developing technical documents, and supporting programs related to nutrition, tobacco control, school health, and injury prevention. This position aims to advance WHO's priority of fostering healthier, safer, and more resilient communities in Vietnam, aligning with national health strategies and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the HLE Team Lead, the Junior Healthy Lifestyles Officer will provide support for NCD risk factors prevention and control, including nutrition and tobacco control, and the school health program. This involves contributing to technical documents, coordinating with implementing partners, supporting monitoring and evaluation activities, and assisting with public-facing events and workshops. The role also includes supporting injury and violence prevention programs, specifically road safety, drowning prevention, and violence against children and women initiatives. Additionally, the volunteer is expected to engage with UNV's mission by understanding volunteerism, contributing field experiences, and potentially promoting online volunteering services.
Work Experience
A minimum of one month of experience is required, with a preference for at least two years of professional experience in communication, external relations, or health promotion at national or international levels. Experience with WHO or other UN/international development organizations is a valuable asset. Proficiency in computer applications and database management is expected.
