Environment Statistics Specialist

Job Purpose
This United Nations Volunteer (UNV) assignment supports UNEP's project "Informing Policy on Climate, Nature, and Pollution." The role focuses on strengthening national capacity to produce climate change and disaster-related statistics, incorporating a gender perspective, to inform adaptation and mitigation policies. The volunteer will contribute to improving statistical guidance, enhancing national capacity in pilot countries, and increasing knowledge on the nexus of climate change, disaster, and gender statistics. This work is crucial for developing effective climate-related policies and achieving SDG 13: Climate Action.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of UNEP's Programme Management Officer (Statistician) and in collaboration with the UN Statistics Division (UNSD), the volunteer will facilitate communication between implementing entities and national consultants in four pilot countries (Cameroon, Colombia, Jordan, Tanzania) for mapping climate change and gender data sources. Responsibilities include analyzing mapping results, organizing national workshops, managing the project webpage, preparing newsletters and progress reports, and supporting project meetings. The volunteer will also maintain communication with stakeholders and manage other relevant tasks to ensure the successful implementation of the project and the development of a pilot list of gender-sensitive climate change indicators and methodological guidance.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of professional work experience is required, preferably in environment or related programs, with a focus on data and statistics. Experience with UNEP, the UN system, or other international development organizations is considered an asset. Proficiency in data analysis, report writing, and computer applications is essential.
Skills
The role requires strong professionalism, teamwork, and communication skills, including the ability to influence others, prepare written reports, and provide technical advice. Creativity in problem-solving and adapting approaches is valued. Expertise in energy and environment is desirable. Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
