Organizational Context
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre supports Country Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, enhancing their project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing. The Centre focuses on human development initiatives across various sectors, including democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, poverty reduction, and gender equality. It aims to strengthen government and community capacities, foster sustainable development, and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This assignment is part of the Macro Regional Mapaton, a large-scale initiative from June 22 to July 31, 2026, organized by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). The goal is to mobilize institutions, academia, civil society, and youth across Latin America to generate crucial geospatial data. This effort aims to reduce critical mapping gaps, enhance disaster risk preparedness, and build a sustainable network of collaborators. The project focuses on specific territories within Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, and Panama, though participants from anywhere in the region or the world are welcome.
Responsibilities
Volunteers will enrich OpenStreetMap's base cartography in priority areas of Latin America using satellite imagery. The focus is on learning by doing, contributing to open geospatial data. Participants will receive training on cartographic digitization through online video sessions, with attendance at a minimum of 4 out of 10 weekly sessions recommended. Basic computer skills, internet access, a standard browser, and a mouse are required for mapping. Intermediate mappers can use their preferred software. A WhatsApp community will facilitate ongoing technical guidance and information sharing. Mapping will be done using platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette, following established project structures. Volunteers must correct their own errors using OSM profile tools. A minimum of 500 error-free objects, meeting OSM quality standards, must be edited to receive certification.
Work Experience
No prior experience in OpenStreetMap editing is required, though it is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science. Basic computer skills, including using a web browser, email, calendar, and video conferencing tools like Zoom, are necessary. The ability to perform basic digital drawing with a mouse is also required.
