Job Purpose
This assignment supports the UNDP and Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) in a regional mapathon initiative across Latin America. The goal is to generate crucial geospatial data to address critical mapping gaps, enhance disaster risk preparedness, and build a sustainable network of collaborators. The initiative mobilizes institutions, academia, civil society, and youth to contribute to OpenStreetMap. Volunteers will play a key role in improving data quality and accessibility, directly contributing to regional development and resilience efforts.
Responsibilities
Online volunteers will contribute to advanced mapathon projects by participating in data validation, providing expert guidance to novice mappers during sessions and community chats, and assisting in training on editing and tagging best practices. Responsibilities include conducting detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies, generating country-specific statistical reports, and performing data quality analysis. The role emphasizes providing technical leadership and specialized knowledge without direct supervision of other online volunteers. Volunteers will engage in scheduled sessions, provide regular assistance in community chats, and conduct individual mapping in their free time.
Work Experience
Advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap is required, including being classified as an advanced user on the OSM profile and Tasking Manager. Solid experience in digital cartography, proficiency with JOSM and iD Editor at an advanced level, and deep understanding of tagging standards and mapping best practices are essential. Experience in facilitating training and supporting other mappers is also required.
