Associate on Countering Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants
Organizational Context
The UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) supports national counterparts in countering narcotics, drug control, intelligence analysis, border management, and combating human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and cybercrime. UNODC implements targeted interventions to strengthen Member States' efforts against trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM), focusing on legal frameworks, cross-border cooperation, and capacity building. These initiatives are supported by the U.S. Department of State and the European Union, aiming to enhance criminal justice responses and promote international protocols.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer Associate will support UNODC's global and regional programs focused on countering trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants in Central Asia. This role involves contributing to the planning, data collection, implementation, and monitoring of activities designed to enhance national legal and policy frameworks, improve cross-border cooperation, and build capacity for investigating related crimes. The position aims to ensure alignment with international practices, UNTOC, and TIP/SOM protocols, addressing emerging trends and regional priorities. The UN Volunteer will assist in organizing workshops, preparing reports, and disseminating communication materials to raise awareness and enhance the visibility of UNODC's interventions in the region.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer and GLO.ACT Coordinator, the UN Volunteer Associate will:
- Support the implementation of UNODC prevention and awareness-raising activities on trafficking in persons (TIP), targeting at-risk groups and adhering to a victim-centered approach.
- Assist with data collection, desk research, and basic analysis related to TIP and smuggling of migrants (SOM), compiling information from national counterparts and UNODC tools to support evidence-informed programming.
- Provide organizational and substantive support for workshops, trainings, and capacity-building activities, including logistical coordination and preparation of materials.
- Contribute to the preparation of progress reports and donor updates, documenting implemented actions, outputs, lessons learned, and results.
- Facilitate knowledge-sharing and coordination among UNODC offices, partners, and UN sister agencies.
- Assist in drafting, editing, and disseminating communication and visibility materials to raise awareness about TIP and SOM and highlight UNODC's interventions.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required, but demonstrated interest or up to two years of experience in projects with law enforcement on countering trafficking in persons or organized crime, crime prevention, criminal justice, research, data analysis, program monitoring, drafting communication materials, or organizing capacity-building activities is desirable. Experience as a volunteer or in another culture is also highly regarded.
