Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer Project Officer will support the expansion of UNODC's Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) in Syria. This role is crucial for establishing strategic partnerships, enhancing coordination with government and UN partners, and identifying/developing new programmatic areas aligned with UNODC's mandate and Syrian government priorities. The position contributes to strengthening UNODC's presence and impact in the region, fostering collaboration, and advancing the organization's objectives in promoting security, justice, and development.
Responsibilities
The Project Officer will establish and maintain contact with national counterparts, including ministries and law enforcement. They will represent UNODC at UN Country Team meetings and inter-agency fora, ensuring effective communication and coordination with UN partners, international organizations, and civil society. The role involves promoting UNODC's mandate and expertise, identifying technical assistance needs, and contributing to project proposal development. Additionally, the officer will engage with donors and partners to explore collaboration, support resource mobilization, map potential partners, and coordinate office establishment logistics. Regular reporting, including situation updates and mission reports, is also a key responsibility.
Work Experience
Requires at least 7 years of progressive experience in technical cooperation, project management, and coordination within the UN system, government, or international organizations. Experience in post-conflict settings, partnership-building, donor relations, and programme development is essential. Strong interpersonal, networking, representational, analytical, drafting, and communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to work independently in challenging environments.
Skills
Key competencies include accountability, adaptability, flexibility, creativity, judgment, decision-making, planning, organizing, professionalism, and self-management. Expertise is sought in Health, Security and Protection, and Legal Affairs. Fluency in Arabic and English is required.
