Organizational Context
The UNDP Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices, strengthening their capacities in project management, strategic alliances, and knowledge sharing. The Centre focuses on human development initiatives in democratic governance, energy, environment, crisis prevention, recovery, HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity building, and poverty reduction. It also emphasizes knowledge management to foster sustainable development and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This assignment, part of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Macro Regional Mapaton, focuses on enriching OpenStreetMap data for Guatemala. The goal is to generate crucial geospatial data to enhance disaster risk preparedness and build a network of collaborators. Participants will contribute to closing critical mapping gaps by digitizing features from satellite imagery. This initiative aims to empower local communities and institutions with accurate, open-source geographic information, supporting sustainable development and disaster resilience efforts across the region.
Responsibilities
Enrich the base cartography of OpenStreetMap in priority areas of Guatemala using satellite imagery. Participants will receive training on cartographic digitization and attend weekly online sessions. They will use platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette to map roads and buildings, adhering to high-quality standards. Volunteers must correct their own errors and aim to contribute a minimum of 500 error-free objects. Continuous learning and collaboration will be facilitated through a WhatsApp community. The role involves autonomous mapping between training sessions, following expert instructions, and ensuring data quality for disaster risk management.
Work Experience
No specific prior experience in OpenStreetMap editing is required, though this knowledge will be highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate an interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science. Basic computer skills, including navigation, email, and virtual meeting platforms, are essential.
Skills
Basic computer literacy, web browsing, email, calendar use, Zoom, WhatsApp groups, ability to follow technical instructions, attention to detail, collaborative attitude, teamwork, organized and supportive communication in community chats, and basic digital drawing with a mouse. Interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science is also required.
