The Centre focuses on human development initiatives in democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity building, and poverty reduction. It also emphasizes knowledge management to foster sustainable development and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This assignment contributes to the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team's (HOT) regional mapathon initiative, aiming to generate crucial geospatial data for disaster risk reduction across Latin America. The volunteer will focus on mapping basic territorial elements in Honduras using satellite imagery. This effort is part of a larger regional macro-mapathon designed to close critical mapping gaps, enhance disaster preparedness, and build a sustainable network of collaborators. The goal is to empower communities and governments with accurate data for better planning and response.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to enrich OpenStreetMap's base cartography in defined priority areas of Honduras using satellite imagery. While prior experience is not mandatory, the focus is on learning by doing and contributing to open geospatial data. Volunteers will receive training on cartographic digitization via video calls and are expected to attend at least four weekly online training sessions. They will use platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette, following instructions from OSM specialists. Volunteers must autonomously digitize roads and buildings between June 22 and July 31, 2026, adhering to high-quality standards. A minimum of 500 error-free objects must be edited to receive certification. Self-correction of errors is part of the process.
Work Experience
No specific experience in OpenStreetMap editing is required, though prior knowledge is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science. Basic computer skills, including using a web browser, email, calendar, and video conferencing tools like Zoom, are essential.
Skills
Essential skills include basic computer literacy, ability to use a web browser, email, and calendar applications. Proficiency with Zoom and WhatsApp for communication and collaboration is required. Candidates need basic digital drawing skills using a mouse, the ability to follow technical instructions precisely, attention to detail, and a collaborative, team-oriented attitude. A tidy and supportive approach in community chats is also valued.
