The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) has been organizing mapathons across Latin America for four years, collaborating with national institutions to address climate change adaptation and critical mapping gaps in OpenStreetMap.
Job Purpose
This assignment is part of the Regional Macro Mapathon (June 22 - July 31, 2026), a regional initiative mobilizing Latin America to generate geospatial data for disaster risk preparedness and build a network of collaborators. The focus is specifically on the Paraguayan territory. Participants will contribute to enriching OpenStreetMap's base cartography using satellite imagery. The initiative aims to close critical mapping gaps, enhance disaster risk reduction capabilities, and foster a sustainable network of contributors. This role involves data processing and contributing to open geospatial data construction.
Responsibilities
Enhance the base cartography of OpenStreetMap in priority areas of Paraguay using satellite imagery. Participants will receive training on cartographic digitization in OpenStreetMap through online video sessions, requiring attendance at a minimum of 4 out of 10 weekly sessions. Basic computer skills, internet access, a standard browser, and a mouse are necessary. Volunteers will join a WhatsApp community for technical guidance and information. Mapping will be done using platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette, following established project structures. Volunteers must correct their own errors using OSM profile tools. The goal is to digitize roads and buildings with high-quality standards, completing at least 500 error-free objects by July 31, 2026, to receive certification.
Work Experience
No specific competencies or prior experience in OpenStreetMap editing are required, but such knowledge is highly valued. A demonstrated interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science is sought. Basic technical skills include computer proficiency, web browsing, regular use of email and calendar, familiarity with Zoom and WhatsApp groups, and the ability to register and log in to platforms.
