Organizational Context
The UNDP Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices, enhancing project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. It comprises professionals focused on democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity development, and poverty reduction. The centre also has a Knowledge Management team dedicated to strengthening government and community capacities, promoting sustainable development, and supporting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This assignment contributes to the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team's (HOT) regional mapathon initiative, aiming to generate geospatial data for disaster risk preparedness across Latin America. The volunteer will focus on Ecuador, enriching OpenStreetMap with essential territorial data derived from satellite imagery. This effort supports closing critical mapping gaps, fostering a network of collaborators, and enhancing disaster response capabilities. The role involves learning and applying cartographic digitization skills to contribute to open geospatial data construction, directly impacting community resilience and sustainable development goals.
Responsibilities
The volunteer will enrich OpenStreetMap's base cartography in priority areas of Ecuador using satellite imagery. This involves learning and applying cartographic digitization skills, with no prior experience required. Participants will attend online training sessions via Zoom (at least 4 out of 10 weekly sessions) and map autonomously using platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette. Responsibilities include digitizing roads and buildings to high-quality standards, correcting personal errors using OSM profile tools, and contributing a minimum of 500 error-free edited objects. Continuous engagement in a WhatsApp community for technical guidance and information sharing is essential. The role requires basic computer literacy, internet access, a standard browser, and a mouse.
Work Experience
No specific experience in OpenStreetMap editing is required; however, prior knowledge in this area is highly valued. A demonstrated interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science is desirable. Basic technical competencies include computer proficiency, web navigation, regular use of email and calendar, familiarity with Zoom and WhatsApp groups, and the ability to perform registrations and logins.
