Organizational Context
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. The Centre focuses on human development initiatives in democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, poverty reduction, and more. This assignment is part of a regional macro mapathon aimed at generating geospatial data for disaster risk preparedness and building a network of collaborators.
Job Purpose
This assignment focuses on enriching OpenStreetMap's base cartography for priority areas in Peru using satellite imagery. It is designed for both beginners and experienced mappers, emphasizing learning by doing. Participants will receive training on cartographic digitization and contribute to building open geospatial data. The goal is to reduce the mapping gap, enhance disaster risk preparedness, and foster a collaborative network. Successful completion involves digitizing at least 500 error-free objects to OSM standards, contributing to a significant regional initiative.
Responsibilities
Enrich OpenStreetMap's base cartography for priority areas in Peru using satellite imagery. Participate in online training sessions (at least 4 out of 10 weekly sessions) covering cartographic digitization. Digitize roads and buildings autonomously between June 22 and July 31, 2026, adhering to high-quality standards. Utilize platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette under established project structures. Correct personal errors by referring to OSM profile and OSMose. Aim to edit a minimum of 500 objects, ensuring they are error-free and meet OSM quality standards for certification. Engage with the volunteer community via WhatsApp for guidance and information sharing.
Work Experience
No prior experience in OpenStreetMap editing is required, though it is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science. Basic digital drawing skills with a mouse are needed. Availability for virtual training and mapping activities is essential.
