Organizational Context
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. The Centre focuses on human development initiatives, including democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, poverty reduction, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This assignment is part of a regional initiative to generate geospatial data for disaster risk preparedness.
Job Purpose
This assignment aims to enrich the base cartography of OpenStreetMap for priority areas in Panama, utilizing satellite imagery. It is designed for both beginners eager to learn cartographic digitization and experienced OSM mappers. Participants will receive training through online video sessions and contribute to building open geospatial data. The goal is to close critical mapping gaps, enhance disaster risk preparedness, and build a network of collaborators, specifically focusing on Panamanian territory within a larger regional effort.
Responsibilities
Digitize roads and buildings in OpenStreetMap for priority areas in Panama using satellite imagery. Participate in at least 4 of 10 weekly online training sessions via Zoom (June 22 - July 31, 2026). Utilize platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette for mapping tasks. Correct personal mapping errors using OSM profile, How Did You Contribute, and OSMose. Aim to edit a minimum of 500 error-free objects meeting OSM quality standards to receive a certificate. Collaborate within a WhatsApp community for guidance and support. Basic computer, internet, and mouse skills are required for mapping and training sessions.
Work Experience
No specific competencies or prior experience in OpenStreetMap editing are required. However, prior knowledge in this area will be highly valued. A demonstrated interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science is sought. Basic computer skills, including navigation and use of online tools, are essential.
Skills
Basic computer literacy, including web browsing, email, and calendar use. Proficiency with Zoom and WhatsApp groups for communication and training. Ability to perform basic digital drawing with a mouse. Capacity to follow technical instructions and maintain attention to detail. Collaborative attitude and willingness to work in a team. Organized and supportive demeanor in community chats. Interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science.
