Organizational Context

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. The Centre focuses on human development initiatives in democratic governance, energy, environment, crisis prevention, HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity building, and poverty reduction, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. This role specifically supports the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team's regional mapathon initiative in Colombia.

Job Purpose

This assignment contributes to the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team's (HOT) Macro Regional Mapathon initiative, aiming to generate crucial geospatial data for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation across Latin America. The volunteer will focus on enriching the OpenStreetMap base map in priority areas within Colombia using satellite imagery. This role provides an opportunity to learn cartographic digitization skills and contribute to building a sustainable network of collaborators, ultimately enhancing disaster preparedness and response capabilities in the region.

Responsibilities

The volunteer will enrich the OpenStreetMap base cartography in priority areas of Colombia using satellite imagery. This involves participating in online training sessions covering cartographic digitization from scratch and attending at least 4 of 10 weekly Zoom sessions. Volunteers will use platforms like Tasking Manager and MapRoulette for mapping, following instructions from OSM specialists. Key tasks include digitizing roads and buildings, ensuring high-quality standards, and correcting personal errors using OSM profile tools. Continuous learning and collaboration will be facilitated through a dedicated WhatsApp community. A minimum of 500 error-free edited objects are required for certification.

Work Experience

No prior experience in OpenStreetMap editing is required, though it is considered a strong asset. Candidates should demonstrate interest in digital cartography, open data, transparency, activism, and citizen science. Basic digital drawing skills using a mouse are needed. Availability for virtual training and mapping activities is essential.

Skills

Basic computer skills, including proficiency with web browsers, email, and calendars. Ability to use Zoom and WhatsApp for communication and collaboration. Basic digital drawing skills with a mouse. Capacity to follow technical instructions and maintain attention to detail. Collaborative attitude and willingness to work in a team. Organized and supportive approach in community chats.
