Participar en proyectos y mejorar la calidad de datos OSM en la Mapatón Perú
Organizational Context
The UNDP Regional Centre supports Country Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, strengthening their capacities in project management, strategic alliances, and knowledge sharing across priority areas. It comprises experts dedicated to human development in Democratic Governance, Environment, Crisis Prevention, HIV/AIDS, Gender, Capacity Development, and Poverty Reduction. The Knowledge Management team further empowers governments and communities, fostering sustainable development and supporting Millennium Development Goals. UNDP, in partnership with OpenStreetMap (HOT), has spearheaded national mapathons for four years, addressing critical cartographic gaps across the region.
Job Purpose
For the past four years, UNDP and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) have successfully promoted national mapathons across Latin America, collaborating with national institutions responsible for climate change adaptation. These initiatives have significantly closed critical cartographic gaps in OpenStreetMap for countries like Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico, engaging hundreds to thousands of volunteers per country. The upcoming Regional Macro Mapathon (June 22 - July 31, 2026) aims to mobilize institutions, academia, technical communities, civil society, and youth across Latin America. The primary purpose is to generate essential geospatial data where it is most needed, thereby reducing the cartographic gap to enhance disaster risk preparedness and build a vibrant, permanent network of collaborators. This specific assignment will focus on Peruvian territory, contributing directly to these regional objectives by improving data quality and supporting specialized mapping projects.
Responsibilities
Online volunteers will contribute to specialized and advanced Mapathon projects in Peru. Main duties include actively participating in data validations and offering expert guidance to beginner mappers during scheduled sessions and within community chats. Volunteers will also intervene in training sessions on best practices for OpenStreetMap editing and tagging. A critical responsibility involves conducting detailed analyses of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies, generating statistical reports by country, and performing comprehensive data quality analysis. The role requires providing technical leadership and specialized knowledge, though without supervisory functions over other online volunteers. The assignment spans seven weeks, from June 22 to August 7. Volunteers are expected to attend sessions according to a communicated schedule and provide regular assistance in WhatsApp community chats. Individual mapping on assigned specialized projects will be conducted during flexible hours, with database analyses required on key Mapathon dates. A dedicated WhatsApp group will facilitate coordination. Participation is contingent upon completing a registration form and creating an OpenStreetMap user account to ensure accurate tracking of support hours, profile identification, communication, and certificate issuance.
Work Experience
Candidates must possess advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap and be classified as an advanced OSM user, verifiable through their personal OSM profile and the Tasking Manager. Solid experience in digital cartography is essential. Proficiency in advanced-level tools such as JOSM and iD Editor is required, along with a deep understanding of tagging standards and best mapping practices. Experience in facilitating training and mentoring other mappers is also a key requirement. Interested individuals should be Peruvian nationals or residents in Peru.
Skills
Required competencies include advanced OpenStreetMap knowledge, deep understanding of tagging standards, and best mapping practices. Technical skills encompass advanced proficiency in JOSM and iD Editor, habituated use of the OpenStreetMap wiki, and the ability to analyze geospatial data to detect inconsistencies. Essential soft skills include the capacity to communicate technical concepts clearly and pedagogically, attention to detail, critical thinking, and a strong disposition for collaboration with diverse volunteers. Native Spanish language proficiency is mandatory.
