Organizational Context
The UNDP Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. It focuses on human development initiatives in democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity building, and poverty reduction. The Centre also manages knowledge to enhance government and community capacities, promote sustainable development, and support the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports the "Macro Mapatón Regional" initiative, a collaborative effort between UNDP and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) to generate geospatial data in Latin America. The goal is to close critical mapping gaps, enhance disaster risk preparedness, and build a network of collaborators. The volunteer will contribute to specialized projects within Ecuador, focusing on improving the quality and accuracy of OpenStreetMap data. This role is crucial for strengthening national capacities in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction through improved mapping.
Responsibilities
Volunteers will support specialized and advanced Mapatón projects in Ecuador by participating in data validation, providing expert guidance to novice mappers during sessions and community chats, and delivering training on editing and tagging best practices. Responsibilities include conducting detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies, generating country-specific statistical reports, and performing data quality analysis. The role emphasizes providing technical leadership and specialized knowledge without direct supervisory functions. Volunteers will assist in scheduled sessions and provide regular support in WhatsApp community chats, dedicating free time to individual mapping and contributing to database analysis during key Mapatón dates.
Work Experience
Advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap and digital cartography is required. Experience with JOSM and iD Editor at an advanced level, deep understanding of tagging standards and mapping best practices, and familiarity with the OpenStreetMap wiki are essential. Experience in facilitating training and supporting other mappers is also desired.
