Job Purpose
This assignment supports specialized and advanced projects within the Colombia Mapatón. The volunteer will contribute to data validation, provide expert guidance to novice mappers, assist in training sessions on editing best practices, and conduct detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies and generate quality reports. The role emphasizes technical leadership and specialized knowledge without direct supervision responsibilities. The initiative aims to generate geospatial data where it's most needed, reduce mapping gaps for disaster preparedness, and build a sustainable network of collaborators across Latin America, with a specific focus on Colombian territory.
Responsibilities
Support specialized and advanced Mapatón projects in Colombia by participating in data validation. Provide expert guidance to beginner mappers during sessions and in community chats. Assist in training sessions covering editing best practices and data tagging. Conduct detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies and generate country-specific statistical reports and data quality assessments. Contribute technical leadership and specialized knowledge without supervisory duties. The assignment spans seven weeks, from June 22 to August 7, requiring regular participation in community chats and individual mapping during free hours. Key dates will involve database analysis generation. A dedicated WhatsApp coordination group will be established.
Work Experience
Advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap is required. This includes being an advanced-level user on OSM and the Tasking Manager, solid experience in digital cartography, and advanced proficiency with JOSM and iD Editor. Deep understanding of tagging standards and mapping best practices, familiarity with the OpenStreetMap wiki, and experience in facilitating training and supporting other mappers are also essential.
