Organizational Context

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing. It focuses on human development initiatives in areas like democratic governance, environment, crisis prevention, poverty reduction, and gender equality. This role is part of a regional macro mapathon initiative aimed at generating geospatial data to improve disaster risk preparedness and build a network of collaborators.

Job Purpose

This assignment supports specialized and advanced projects within the Honduras Mapatón initiative, a collaboration between UNDP and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). The goal is to enhance the quality of OpenStreetMap data by engaging volunteers in validation, providing expert guidance to new mappers, conducting training on editing best practices, and performing detailed data analysis. The role contributes to closing critical mapping gaps in Honduras, supporting disaster risk reduction efforts, and fostering a sustainable network of contributors. The volunteer will provide technical leadership and specialized knowledge without direct supervision responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Volunteers will contribute to advanced Mapatón projects in Honduras by participating in data validation and offering expert guidance to novice mappers during sessions and community chats. They will assist in training sessions focused on editing and tagging best practices. Key duties include conducting detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies, generating country-specific statistical reports, and performing data quality assessments. The focus is on providing technical leadership and specialized knowledge, not direct supervision. Volunteers will be assigned to specific sessions based on a schedule and are expected to provide regular assistance in WhatsApp community chats. Individual mapping will be done in free time, with specific requests for database analysis during key Mapatón dates. A dedicated WhatsApp coordination group will be established.

Work Experience

Advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap is required, including being classified as an advanced user on the OSM profile and Tasking Manager. Solid experience in digital cartography, advanced proficiency with JOSM and iD Editor, and deep understanding of tagging standards and mapping best practices are essential. Experience in facilitating training and supporting other mappers is also required.

Skills
