Organizational Context
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic alliances, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. It focuses on democratic governance, energy, environment, crisis prevention, gender, capacity development, and poverty reduction. UNDP, in partnership with Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), has organized national mapathons across Latin America for four years, improving critical mapping gaps and engaging hundreds of volunteers.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports the Guatemala Mapatón project, contributing to specialized and advanced tasks within the regional Macro Mapatón. The goal is to generate crucial geospatial data, reduce mapping gaps for disaster risk preparedness, and build a sustainable network of collaborators. Volunteers will enhance the quality of OpenStreetMap data, support disaster risk reduction efforts, and foster community engagement in mapping initiatives across Latin America. The role emphasizes technical leadership and specialized knowledge sharing to improve mapping accuracy and coverage.
Responsibilities
Support specialized and advanced tasks within the Guatemala Mapatón project. Participate in data validation processes and provide expert guidance to beginner mappers during sessions and community chats. Assist in training sessions on editing and tagging best practices. Conduct detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies, generate country-specific statistical reports, and perform data quality analysis. Contribute technical leadership and specialized knowledge without direct supervision of other online volunteers. The assignment spans seven weeks, requiring participation in scheduled sessions and regular engagement in community chats.
Work Experience
Requires advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap, classification as an advanced user on OSM and Tasking Manager, solid experience in digital cartography, and advanced proficiency with JOSM and iD Editor. Experience with OSM wiki, geospatial data analysis, identifying inconsistencies, and facilitating training sessions is also required.
