Organizational Context
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean supports country offices by strengthening project management, strategic partnerships, and knowledge sharing in priority areas. The Centre focuses on human development initiatives in democratic governance, energy, environment, crisis prevention, HIV/AIDS, gender, capacity building, and poverty reduction. It also works to enhance government and community capacity for sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports the UN Mapatón project in Mexico, a collaboration between UNDP and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). Building on previous national mapathons, this regional event aims to generate critical geospatial data to reduce mapping gaps, enhance disaster risk preparedness, and build a network of collaborators across Latin America. The volunteer will contribute to specialized projects, focusing on data validation, providing expert guidance to novice mappers, assisting in training sessions on editing best practices, and conducting detailed data analysis to identify inconsistencies and generate quality reports for Mexico.
Responsibilities
Support specialized and advanced Mapatón projects in Mexico by participating in data validation. Provide expert guidance to beginner mappers during sessions and in community chats. Assist in training sessions covering best practices for editing and tagging OpenStreetMap data. Conduct detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies and generate country-specific statistical reports and data quality assessments. Contribute technical leadership and specialized knowledge without direct supervision of other online volunteers. The assignment runs for seven weeks, from June 22 to August 7, requiring regular participation in scheduled sessions and community chats, with individual mapping done in free time. Analysis of the database will be requested on key dates.
Work Experience
Advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap and its Tasking Manager is required. Solid experience in digital cartography, proficiency with JOSM and iD Editor at an advanced level, and deep understanding of tagging standards and mapping best practices are essential. Experience in facilitating training and supporting other mappers is also needed.

Advanced OpenStreetMap knowledge, digital cartography, JOSM/iD Editor proficiency, understanding of tagging standards, ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, geospatial data analysis, critical thinking, attention to detail, and collaborative spirit. Fluency in Spanish is required.
