Job Purpose
This assignment supports the UNDP and Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team's regional mapathon initiative in Panama. The goal is to generate crucial geospatial data, reduce mapping gaps for disaster risk preparedness, and build a network of collaborators. The volunteer will contribute to specialized projects, focusing on data validation, providing expert guidance to new mappers, assisting in training sessions on editing best practices, and conducting detailed analysis of mapped areas to identify inconsistencies and generate quality reports. The role emphasizes technical leadership and specialized knowledge without supervisory duties.
Responsibilities
Volunteers will support specialized and advanced mapathon projects in Panama. Key duties include participating in data validation, offering expert guidance to beginner mappers during sessions and community chats, contributing to training on editing and tagging best practices, and performing detailed analysis of mapped areas. This involves identifying inconsistencies, generating country-specific statistical reports, and conducting data quality analysis. The role requires providing technical leadership and specialized knowledge, but not direct supervision of other online volunteers. The assignment runs for seven weeks, from June 22 to August 7, with participation in scheduled sessions and regular assistance in WhatsApp community chats. Individual mapping will be done during free time, with specific requests for database analysis on key dates.
Work Experience
Advanced knowledge of OpenStreetMap is required, including being classified as an advanced user on OSM and the Tasking Manager. Solid experience in digital cartography, advanced proficiency with JOSM and iD Editor, and a deep understanding of tagging standards and mapping best practices are essential. Familiarity with the OpenStreetMap wiki is also expected. Experience in facilitating training and supporting other mappers is desirable.
