Organizational Context
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the UN's sexual and reproductive health agency, dedicated to ensuring every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. Operating in over 150 countries, UNFPA focuses on achieving zero unmet need for contraception, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender-based violence by 2030. The West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) is adapting the "Girls Are in Action" (GAIA) Toolkit for regional rollout, aiming to provide culturally sensitive, visual tools for adolescent girls' safety, health, and socio-emotional development.
Job Purpose
This role supports UNFPA WCARO's initiative to adapt the "Girls Are in Action" (GAIA) Toolkit for West and Central Africa. The primary purpose is to professionally lay out the newly translated French curriculum, mirroring the high-quality design of the original English version. This involves meticulously migrating French text into the existing graphic design, ensuring structural integrity, visual consistency, and readability for both digital distribution and field printing. The contribution is crucial for equipping implementing partners and facilitators with effective tools to support adolescent girls, directly advancing UNFPA's goals for gender equality and youth empowerment in the region.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteer will replicate the design, styling, color palette, icons, and graphic elements of the original 338-page English curriculum into a new document featuring the French translation. This includes adjusting structural layouts, text boxes, and formatting to accommodate the French language while maintaining functional page alignments. The volunteer will also format or recreate visual components, diagrams, and instructional cards, such as communication guides and flow charts, to seamlessly integrate the French text. The final output must be clean, professional, and readable, suitable for digital rollout and black-and-white field printing. Volunteers will work collaboratively, dividing the workload while ensuring alignment on the final graphic design, and will provide periodic updates to the manager.
Work Experience
A strong portfolio in graphic design, desktop publishing (DTP), and document layout curation is essential. Experience formatting multi-page, text-heavy training manuals, toolkits, or educational curricula is required. Proficiency in professional design software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator) is necessary. Previous experience with international development or humanitarian organizations is considered an asset.
Skills
Key skills include graphic design, desktop publishing, and document layout curation. Proficiency in professional design software (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or equivalent) is crucial. An excellent eye for visual hierarchy, typography, and template replication is needed. Fluency or working proficiency in French is highly advantageous for accurate text placement. Strong organizational and teamwork skills are beneficial for collaborative work.
