Organizational Context
The World Health Organization (WHO) is the UN's leading authority on public health, dedicated to promoting health, ensuring access to healthcare, safeguarding global well-being, and supporting vulnerable populations through partnerships. For World No Tobacco Day 2026, WHO is launching a campaign themed 'Unmasking the appeal - countering nicotine and tobacco addiction,' focusing on the industry's targeting of youth. This initiative aims to combat high rates of youth tobacco use in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
Job Purpose
This role supports the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean's digital campaign for World No Tobacco Day 2026. The primary purpose is to mobilize 1,000 Online Volunteers to amplify crucial public health messages across digital platforms, raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine addiction. The campaign aims to protect youth from industry tactics, promote healthier lifestyles, support WHO's tobacco control advocacy, and advance SDG 3. Volunteers will contribute to a large-scale digital movement, fostering community engagement and awareness across the region.
Responsibilities
Online Volunteers will actively participate in a regional digital awareness campaign for World No Tobacco Day 2026. Key duties include attending virtual onboarding sessions, sharing campaign visuals and messages across social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp), and regularly publishing content according to WHO's guidance. Volunteers will promote campaign hashtags, encourage discussions on tobacco and nicotine risks, extend outreach to youth networks and communities, and adhere to ethical communication standards. They will also provide brief progress updates and a final report detailing activities and outreach.
Work Experience
Required experience includes an active presence on at least one social media platform, good communication and social media skills, and basic digital communication and online outreach abilities. While not mandatory, previous experience in digital campaigns, online advocacy, public health awareness, or community engagement is considered an asset.
Skills
Volunteers should possess good communication and social media skills, with an interest in public health, youth engagement, or awareness campaigns. Essential abilities include following communication guidance and posting schedules, and basic digital outreach. Ethical communication and respectful online behaviour are also required. Proficiency in multiple languages is desirable but not mandatory.
