Job Purpose
This United Nations Volunteer assignment supports UNICEF Jamaica’s Communication and Advocacy portfolio by strengthening the Country Office Communication Team's capacity in advocacy, content production, digital engagement, and child/youth participation. The role provides essential hands-on support to enhance the visibility and impact of UNICEF's work across multiple platforms. The Assistant Communication Officer will contribute to developing and implementing communication and advocacy activities through creative, technical, and operational support. This includes assisting with content creation, storytelling, digital innovation, public outreach, and stakeholder engagement to promote key messages, increase public awareness, and foster stronger engagement with children, young people, partners, and the public.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Communication Officer will support the development and implementation of communication and advocacy initiatives, ensuring effective outreach and engagement across various platforms. Key responsibilities include designing high-quality visual materials for digital and print, ensuring alignment with branding guidelines. The role involves developing written and visual content for diverse audiences, creating public information materials, and supporting the drafting of press releases and digital content. Social media content design and management are crucial for strengthening digital presence. Additionally, the officer will assist in planning, organizing, and executing events, including designing event branding. Support for disaster management and emergency communication includes developing communication products and producing multimedia content. Photography and videography skills are needed to capture and edit high-quality images and videos for programs, events, and field activities, documenting program impact through visual storytelling. Website content management and updates using a CMS are also required.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 month of experience is required, with 1 year of relevant experience preferred. Experience in communications, public information, digital marketing, graphic design, or multimedia production is essential. This includes developing communication products for digital and print platforms, utilizing graphic design, multimedia editing, and social media management tools, and experience with website content management systems. Experience supporting communication campaigns, public outreach, events, or advocacy activities is also required.
Skills
Key competencies include accountability, adaptability, flexibility, creativity, judgment, decision-making, planning, organizing, professionalism, and self-management. Technical skills encompass arts and design, communication, and volunteer management. Excellent oral and written communication, accuracy, attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and proficiency in digital communication platforms and Microsoft Office are also vital. Familiarity with communication for development approaches and digital engagement strategies is beneficial.
