Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in Costa Rica aims to enhance cooperation among UN entities on economic development and climate change resilience. This assignment supports Costa Rica's commitment to localizing the 2030 Agenda through inclusive processes. The role focuses on strengthening the national network of local governments, promoting Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs), and facilitating dialogues between local authorities, civil society, academia, and the private sector, with an emphasis on SDGs 16 and 17.
Job Purpose
The UN Specialist will support the UN Resident Coordinator Office in scaling up the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Costa Rica. This involves strengthening the national network of local governments and promoting Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs). The role will facilitate multi-level dialogues among local authorities, civil society, academia, and the private sector. A key focus will be on SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions) and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals), contributing to inclusive governance and inter-institutional collaboration. The volunteer will also engage with national stakeholders to promote accountability and transparency, supporting the design and implementation of SDG-related consultation processes and political analysis.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support the SDG localization strategy, including scaling up the Municipal Network for SDGs and preparing Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs). Responsibilities include facilitating interagency dialogues and capacity-building workshops on SDGs 16 and 17 for institutions, youth, and civil society. The role involves providing technical and analytical support for political and governance analysis related to Agenda 2030 implementation to the national SDG Secretariat and RCO. The volunteer will contribute to designing and implementing participatory processes for national SDG target definition and collaborate with UN Agencies to strengthen civic space, democratic engagement, peacebuilding, inclusion, and human rights. Additionally, the role supports documenting and monitoring SDG acceleration initiatives, coordinating youth-led or civil society projects, and expanding SDG localization in coastal cantons by strengthening partnerships for integrated solid waste management and circular economy solutions.
Work Experience
No prior experience is required, but demonstrated interest or up to two years of experience in local development and governance is desirable. This includes supporting municipal projects or community initiatives. Basic understanding of SDGs, community engagement skills, awareness of gender and inclusion, basic data skills, and initial experience in project monitoring are beneficial.
