Development of Mobile Application for EORE for UNICEF Mozambique

In Mozambique, UNICEF leads the Child Protection Work Stream initiative to mitigate risks from explosive ordnance. This involves implementing child-friendly Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) to promote safe behaviors, enhance coordination, and use data-driven approaches to reduce casualties and improve resilience in communities affected by conflict and explosive hazards.
Job Purpose
This role supports UNICEF Mozambique's initiative to develop a mobile application for Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) in 2026. The primary purpose is to create a child-friendly, context-appropriate mobile tool to educate children and caregivers in conflict-affected areas about the dangers of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), explosive remnants of war (ERW), and unexploded ordnance (UXO). The application will promote safe behaviors, reduce casualties, and enhance the overall safety and resilience of vulnerable populations. The volunteer will contribute to the design, development, and dissemination of EORE materials, ensuring they are culturally relevant and accessible, including integration of local languages.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteer will support the development of a mobile application for Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) for UNICEF Mozambique, available on Google Play and the App Store. Key tasks include researching and reviewing existing EORE/MRE mobile applications, such as the Myanmar EORE/MRE App, to inform the development process. The volunteer will assist in contextualizing and developing the EORE app for Mozambique based on existing tools and best practices. They will contribute to creating and disseminating context-appropriate EORE materials, ensuring they are child-friendly and gender-sensitive. Additionally, the volunteer will support the production of documentation in English and Portuguese and help integrate relevant local languages, such as Makonde, Makhuwa, and Swahili, in collaboration with the Child Protection Work Stream team.
Work Experience
Candidates should possess strong research, graphic design, and app development skills. Prior background knowledge and working experience in Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) are required. Experience in developing mobile applications for educational or safety purposes is beneficial.
