The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) globally leads and supports the UN security management system. It enables the safe delivery of UN programmes in challenging environments by managing security risks. The Global Security Information Centre (GSIC) within UNDSS provides 24/7 situational awareness, supporting coordination, operational planning, and crisis management through integrated information and analytics for senior leadership decision-making.
Job Purpose
The Reporting Officer will be part of the UNDSS Global Security Information Centre (GSIC) team, operating 24/7 to provide essential situational awareness for UN leadership. This role supports coordination, operational planning, and crisis management by monitoring global security information, verifying reports, and disseminating critical alerts. The incumbent will contribute to informed decision-making and effective information sharing across the UN Security Management System (UNSMS) by producing timely and accurate security-related products and supporting crisis response operations.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will monitor and manage global security information, including receiving, verifying, and disseminating reports from UN field locations. This involves tracking incoming reports, alerts, and open-source information to maintain situational awareness and identify emerging threats affecting UN personnel and operations. The role includes supporting information management by organizing and updating incident data according to UNDSS standards. Additionally, the incumbent will provide communication support to UN Field Security Officers, assist in developing multimedia security products like infographics and maps, and offer substantive support during crises, including maintaining accurate records of actions taken. The position also involves developing and maintaining a global security database, conducting preliminary data analysis to identify trends, and contributing to various security reports and analytical products.
Work Experience
Requires 3-5 years of relevant experience in areas such as political or international affairs, public information, journalism, military, police, security, civil affairs, humanitarian affairs, human rights, or crisis operations and management. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, information management, data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI), and familiarity with multimedia production tools and open-source platforms are essential.
