Job Purpose
The Environmental and Health Risk Communication Specialist will enhance national capabilities in managing information, reducing uncertainty, and building trust between authorities, experts, and the public concerning environmental hazards and health risks. This role is crucial for bridging science, policy, and public perception to promote protective behaviors, effectively manage disease outbreaks, and facilitate informed decision-making processes within the Solomon Islands. The specialist will contribute to strengthening public health and environmental safety communication strategies.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist, the Environmental and Health Risk Communication Specialist will translate complex scientific data into accessible language for diverse audiences. Key duties include facilitating environmental health risk assessments, encompassing hazard identification, exposure assessment, and communication strategies. The specialist will support the implementation of Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) principles, ensuring timely and credible information during rapid-onset incidents like spills or disease outbreaks. Responsibilities also involve drafting press releases, developing media strategies, managing community outreach via social media and public forums, and engaging with stakeholders including community members, officials, and industry representatives.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required. This includes advanced computer proficiency, particularly with MS Office applications, and strong analytical and writing skills for data interpretation and presentation. Experience working effectively in multicultural environments and under stress is essential. Familiarity with the Pacific region, especially the Solomon Islands, and an interest in development work and volunteerism are considered advantageous.
