Organizational Context
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in Guinea, established in 2010, promotes and protects human rights. It works with the Guinean state to implement international human rights obligations. The office has two units: Promotion, focusing on capacity building and technical cooperation; and Protection, dedicated to documenting human rights violations and advocacy. OHCHR collaborates with UN agencies, diplomatic missions, and civil society organizations to strengthen human rights monitoring and advocacy efforts.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer will support the OHCHR's mandate in Guinea, contributing to the promotion and protection of human rights. This involves working with UN agencies, government authorities, and civil society during a transitional period to foster social cohesion, national reconciliation, and support political initiatives. The role includes engaging with diplomatic missions on socio-political concerns and collaborating with civil society on human rights monitoring. The volunteer will assist in enhancing the overall human rights situation in Guinea through research, reporting, and advocacy, aligning with the UN's development objectives and the rule of law.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will organize field visits to investigate human rights allegations, including gender-based violence. Responsibilities include conducting research on the human rights situation using various sources, drafting advocacy notes, and preparing diverse human rights reports (ad hoc, weekly, monthly, annual, and contributions to UN reports). The role involves strengthening technical and institutional capacities, establishing cooperation with state and non-state actors, and contributing to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the office's work plan. The volunteer will also assist in resource mobilization, project design, and enhancing the visibility of OHCHR's mandate and activities through public relations and media. Additionally, the volunteer is encouraged to deepen their understanding of volunteerism and contribute to UNV publications.
Work Experience
0-2 years of professional experience. Experience as a volunteer or in cross-cultural settings is desirable. Proficiency in computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media) is required. Strong interpersonal, networking, and communication skills, along with good writing and analytical abilities, are essential. The candidate must be motivated to contribute to peace and development and willing to work collaboratively.
