Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) works to promote global peace and security, human rights, and development by combating drugs, organized crime, corruption, and terrorism. UNODC supports member states and civil society with technical assistance, programs, research, and normative support to address complex threats. This assignment supports the Technical Secretariat of the National Council for Combating Deforestation and Associated Environmental Crimes (CONALDEF) in Colombia, an inter-institutional body established to tackle deforestation and related environmental crimes.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment provides technical support to the Technical Secretariat of CONALDEF, a key inter-institutional body in Colombia focused on combating deforestation and associated environmental crimes. The role is crucial for preserving natural ecosystems and strengthening environmental rule of law. The volunteer will contribute to the project 'Implementation of Inter-institutional Actions to Combat Deforestation and other Associated Environmental Crimes in the Amazon Ecoregion.' The expected outcomes include strengthening environmental justice and promoting the rule of law in targeted territories, working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
Responsibilities
Provide operational support for technical environmental activities within the 'Fund for Life and Biodiversity' project, adhering to defined guidelines and tools, and supporting CONALDEF's coordination processes. Assist in collecting, organizing, and systematizing technical and contextual information related to environmental factors associated with deforestation to aid information consolidation. Offer logistical support for applying technical tools to detect environmental threats, monitor ecosystems, and generate evidence to combat environmental crimes in prioritized areas. Support CONALDEF operationally in inter-institutional coordination spaces, workshops, working groups, and community events, contributing to environmental conservation and monitoring efforts. Manage correspondence, maintaining physical and digital control of all documents, ensuring traceability, and complying with UN policies.
Work Experience
Requires 1 month of relevant experience. Experience in wildlife protection, environmental technical assistance in protected areas, or strategic ecosystems is beneficial. Experience as a field assistant or working with the UN or other international development organizations is an advantage. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, database management, and ecological data analysis is desired.
Skills
Adaptability, flexibility, judgment, decision-making, planning, organization, professionalism, self-management, teamwork, and communication skills are essential. Expertise in Natural and Life Sciences is required. Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work inclusively and collaboratively are also important.
