The UN Volunteer assignment supports the implementation of the Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) in Bishkek.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer will support the implementation of the Mobility Tracking Matrix (MTM) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The MTM system tracks and monitors displacement and population mobility, designed to systematically capture, process, and disseminate information to understand the movements and evolving needs of various mobile populations. The assignment specifically focuses on establishing an MTM geodatabase for Bishkek using IOM-collected data. A key contribution will be providing technical support to enumerators to enhance data quality and ensure the effective functioning of the MTM system within the Kyrgyz context.
Responsibilities
Under direct supervision, the GIS and Mobile Mapping Specialist will prepare and technically set up the SW Maps projects, including layers, attributes, and validation rules. They will train and build the capacity of enumerators on map reading, GPS principles, coordinate systems, and the use of the SW Maps application, including hands-on field practice. The specialist will provide technical support during fieldwork, troubleshoot issues, and conduct quality assurance checks on collected datasets, identifying and rectifying errors. Responsibilities also include consolidating, cleaning, and validating datasets, preparing analysis-ready geospatial datasets, and documenting data structures. Furthermore, the role involves producing updated base maps and thematic maps of Bishkek related to internal mobility, ensuring they meet cartographic standards for operational use. Finally, the specialist will support knowledge transfer and contribute to technical reports summarizing methodology, findings, and recommendations.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in GIS, mobile data collection, and mapping is required. This includes experience with GIS and spatial data, producing thematic maps, using mobile data collection tools like SW Maps, training and supporting field teams, and data cleaning/validation. Experience in mobility, migration, or humanitarian projects is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is also necessary.
Skills
The role requires strong skills in GIS and spatial data management, mobile data collection tools (specifically SW Maps or similar), data cleaning and quality assurance, and mapping/visualization. The candidate should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively and independently, and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
