Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates globally, supporting countries in poverty eradication and environmental protection through policy development, skill-building, and institutional strengthening. The UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC), based in Istanbul, collaborates with 18 Country Offices. The UN Security Management System (UNSMS) aims to manage security risks to enable UN operations, including UNDP's programme delivery in the region.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports the UN Security Risk Management (SRM) process, crucial for enabling UNDP programmes by managing safety and security risks. The Online Volunteer will contribute by producing daily comprehensive reports on geopolitical, security, and safety developments in Western Europe, derived from open-media sources. This role is vital for informing risk assessments and ensuring the safe and effective delivery of UNDP's regional initiatives. The assignment is remote, with an expected start as soon as possible after selection.
Responsibilities
The Online Volunteer will support the UNDP Security Office in Istanbul by monitoring open-media sources in Western Europe and producing daily reports on geopolitical, security, and safety news. Reports must be submitted by 12 PM GMT+3, Monday to Friday, covering significant regional events. The volunteer will utilize local media, including newspapers and online articles in local languages, ensuring information is accurate and credible. Regular participation in weekly online feedback sessions with the supervisor is required to discuss progress and receive guidance. The role demands strong research and analytical skills to synthesize information effectively and present it clearly.
Work Experience
While no specific years of experience are mandated, candidates are expected to possess strong research and analytical skills, the ability to synthesize information from diverse sources into concise reports, and familiarity with the geopolitical landscape, culture, and current events of Western Europe. Proficiency in English is required, with knowledge of other Western European languages being an asset.
