Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a United Nations agency dedicated to promoting health, ensuring global safety, and serving vulnerable populations. Operating in the South-East Asia Region, WHO focuses on expanding universal health coverage and coordinating responses to health emergencies. The WHO Health Emergencies Programme (WHE) works to prepare countries for all-hazards health emergencies, strengthening systems for detection, investigation, and response, with a particular emphasis on community engagement and resilience.

Job Purpose

This role supports the WHO Health Emergencies Programme (WHE) in the South-East Asia Region by transforming existing technical materials into a coherent, visually engaging, and user-friendly training package. The objective is to enhance the design and layout of various documents, including a Competency Guide, Instruction Manual, Situational Assessment Tool, and PowerPoint training modules. The work aims to improve clarity, engagement, and practical application of public health emergency risk management concepts, particularly for community health workers. The ultimate contribution is to create adaptable resources that can be easily implemented and contextualized by Member States.

Responsibilities

The volunteer will develop a consistent visual identity and design framework aligned with WHO branding guidelines for multiple publications. Key tasks include designing and formatting a 16-page Competency Guide, a 48-page Instruction Manual, and a 15-page Situational Assessment Tool. Additionally, the volunteer will update the design of 10 PowerPoint training modules (approx. 20-30 slides each) to enhance clarity and engagement. This involves creating simple, clear illustrations and visual assets tailored to the South-East Asia context, including a set of 11 character illustrations for consistent use. The volunteer will also develop a reusable library of visual assets and ensure all materials are designed as adaptable templates for translation and country-specific contextualization, applying strong visual hierarchy and layout techniques.

Work Experience

Required experience includes proven graphic design or illustration skills for publications. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to create clear, functional illustrations, diagrams, and workflows, or have experience designing character illustrations and personas. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator (or equivalent), and PowerPoint design for training content is essential. Experience with public health, development, or UN/WHO materials, particularly within the South-East Asia context, is desirable.
