Organizational Context

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), established in 1965, is the UN's global development network operating in nearly 170 countries. Its mission is to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and build resilience. The Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) serves as the primary knowledge and advisory center for the Europe and Central Asia region. The Innovation and Digital Team supports digital transformation and emerging technologies, focusing on AI sandboxes, internal AI platforms, and AI adoption tools for Country Offices.

Job Purpose

This role supports the UNDP Innovation and Digital Team's technical AI workstream, acting as a bridge between policy advisory and hands-on development. The UN Volunteer will contribute to technical reviews of AI solutions, develop simple AI prototypes and automation tools using Python and ML libraries, and assist with light engineering tasks for existing team products. The position involves contributing to project documents, preparing training materials, and participating in technical exchanges with partner Country Offices. A key aspect is supporting the regional Future of Work Academy and internal AI adoption efforts, enabling the translation of policy advice into functional systems and fostering AI skills among youth.

Responsibilities

Under supervision, the UN Volunteer will support the Innovation and Digital Team's AI workstream. Key duties include conducting technical reviews of AI solutions proposed by Country Offices, assessing feasibility and responsible AI considerations. The volunteer will develop simple AI prototypes, scripts, and automation tools using Python and ML libraries, and assist with light engineering tasks for existing team products, including documentation and testing. Contributions will be made to technical sections of project documents and Terms of Reference. The role also involves preparing technical training materials and demos for Country Office staff and government counterparts, and participating in technical exchanges to document needs and opportunities. The volunteer will support internal AI adoption efforts and contribute to the regional Future of Work Academy, engaging youth in AI skills development. Additionally, the role involves supporting Country Offices in defining digital needs, scoping technical support, defining volunteer profiles, and drafting concept notes and task descriptions, providing technical accompaniment during implementation.

Work Experience

While no prior experience is strictly required, a demonstrated interest or experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or applied software development is beneficial. Proficiency in Python programming and familiarity with AI/ML libraries are assets. Exposure to large language models or agentic AI frameworks is highly desirable. Familiarity with version control (Git), Jupyter notebooks, and collaborative development workflows is also advantageous. Understanding of responsible AI concepts and strong communication skills in English are important.
