Public Communication Project on the Work of OHCHR/UNMISS Human Rights Division
Organizational Context
The UNMISS Human Rights Division, also serving as OHCHR's field presence in South Sudan, monitors, documents, and reports on human rights and humanitarian law violations. Its mandate includes protecting civilians, promoting accountability, strengthening national institutions, and increasing public understanding of human rights. This project aims to enhance external communication of the Division's work through accessible formats, primarily for LinkedIn.
Job Purpose
This assignment supports a specific public communication project for the OHCHR South Sudan / UNMISS Human Rights Division. The goal is to adapt important human rights reporting, analysis, and advocacy messages into clearer, more accessible products for professional audiences, particularly on LinkedIn. The project focuses on creating a complete communication package, including concept notes, content plans, social media posts, and visual materials, to strengthen public understanding of the Division's work. It is a defined project with specific outputs, not ongoing social media management.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Information Management Officer, Online Volunteers will contribute to a public communication package. Key deliverables include: a project concept note detailing theme, audience, tone, and timeline; a content plan with topics, messages, and publication sequence; at least 12 draft LinkedIn posts on human rights themes and the Division's work; at least four visual communication products (infographics, quote cards, etc.); a messaging bank with captions and hashtags; and a final consolidated package with a handover note for review and use.
Work Experience
Demonstrated experience in communications, journalism, public information, or media relations is required. Candidates must be proficient in producing high-quality written materials and social media content, using social media platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram), and content scheduling tools. Visual communication skills using tools like Canva or Adobe Illustrator are also required.
Skills
Essential skills include the ability to synthesize complex human rights content into clear, accessible public-facing language. Proficiency in English drafting and editing is crucial. Familiarity with United Nations communication standards, editorial guidelines, and visual identity frameworks is an asset. Strong written communication, social media content creation, and visual communication abilities are necessary.
