Job Purpose
The World Food Programme (WFP) is a leading UN agency dedicated to saving lives and changing them by providing food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. In Guatemala, WFP is committed to achieving Zero Hunger and preventing malnutrition, supporting the national "Great Crusade for Nutrition" strategy. This role is vital in addressing the country's high rates of chronic malnutrition and anemia, particularly in areas affected by climate change. The volunteer will contribute to essential health and nutrition interventions, working directly with vulnerable populations to improve their well-being and resilience.
Responsibilities
The Health and Nutrition Brigade Assistant will support the WFP Nutrition Officer in planning and coordinating inter-agency activities, engaging community leaders, and collaborating with local authorities. Key responsibilities include conducting nutritional assessments for children under five, adolescents, pregnant, and lactating women; assisting in maternal and child health actions, including prenatal and postnatal care; verifying immunization records and providing counseling on essential interventions. The role involves administering micronutrient supplementation and deworming according to Ministry of Health protocols, and providing counseling on healthy feeding, care, and disease prevention practices. Additionally, the assistant will manage brigade supplies, maintain accurate records using official Ministry of Health formats and WFP platforms, and prepare monthly reports on activities, coverage, results, and relevant findings.
Work Experience
A minimum of 1 month of general work experience is required, with 6 months of relevant experience in integral health and nutrition education. Desirable experience includes working in emergency nutrition, food security, with rural communities, or with UN/international organizations. Proficiency in anthropometric measurements, participatory methodologies, and strong communication and interpersonal skills are beneficial.
Skills
Key competencies include adaptability, flexibility, effective communication, planning and organization, inclusion, respect, self-management, and group management/conflict resolution. Technical skills in anthropometric measurements and participatory communication methods are important. Experience in community development, development programs, and health sectors is relevant.
