Social Media Officer
Organizational Context
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Tokyo has been the UN's communication arm for over 60 years, disseminating information relevant to Japanese society through various channels including social media. UNIC Tokyo actively engages with the public, organizes outreach events for students, and facilitates press interactions for senior UN officials. The centre focuses on translating key UN documents and promoting UN values, sustainable development, peace, security, and human rights within the Japanese context.
Job Purpose
The Social Media Officer will be instrumental in expanding UNIC Tokyo's social media presence to effectively reach a Japanese-speaking audience. This role involves researching, planning, creating, and disseminating engaging content across platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, aligning with UNIC Tokyo's priorities and the Japanese context. The officer will also manage the office's blog, sharing staff and partner stories. A key aspect of the role is to strengthen information integrity by monitoring and combating misinformation and disinformation on digital platforms, contributing to the UN's communication objectives.
Responsibilities
The Social Media Officer will research and identify relevant local and global topics for social media dissemination, adhering to UN guidelines. Responsibilities include managing the editorial calendar, creating content using provided visuals and text, and ensuring timely posting on UNIC Tokyo's social media accounts. The role involves preparing and publishing blog articles, monitoring post performance, and analyzing social media trends and risks, including those related to information integrity. The officer will also supervise interns supporting social media activities and coordinate with internal and external partners to cross-promote content and expand reach. Additional duties may include contributing to UNV programme mandates and promoting volunteerism.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of professional experience in digital communication, public relations, marketing, or media is required. Experience working with the UN or other international organizations is considered an asset. Proficiency in social media platforms (X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), MS Office applications, and online analytics tools is essential. Skills in visual editing (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva) are highly desirable, as are excellent oral and written communication skills.
