Job Purpose
The Gender and Climate Change Specialist will be responsible for implementing the gender action plan within the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) project in Mali. This role involves close collaboration with monitoring and evaluation and communication specialists to ensure gender is integrated into climate adaptation strategies. The specialist will support the revision of the NAP to address gender-specific needs, contribute to sector-specific adaptation plans, and enhance institutional capacities for gender mainstreaming in climate policies. The objective is to ensure that adaptation priorities are gender-responsive, promote inclusive participation, and contribute to increased climate adaptation finance and effective climate change mitigation.
Responsibilities
The Gender and Climate Change Specialist will oversee the implementation of the gender action plan for the NAP project. Key responsibilities include: Integrating Gender into NAP Revision: Support analysis of gender gaps in the existing NAP, ensure adaptation priorities address differentiated needs of women, men, youth, and vulnerable groups, and contribute to a gender-sensitive revised NAP aligned with national and international commitments. Supporting Sectoral Adaptation Plans: Participate in formulating sector-specific plans (agriculture, energy, health, water) with a gender perspective, propose gender indicators for adaptation measures, and ensure coherence with national gender equality policies. Strengthening Institutional Capacities: Develop practical tools for integrating gender into climate policy planning and implementation, support inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms on gender and adaptation, and contribute to educational and communication materials. Supporting Inclusive Consultations: Ensure active participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in consultations, document their contributions, and promote participatory approaches. Integrate communication for development principles for effective stakeholder engagement. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Knowledge Management: Contribute to a gender-sensitive monitoring framework, participate in collecting and analyzing sex-disaggregated data, document best practices, and support the drafting of gender-sensitive reports and capitalization of project results.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience is required. This includes practical experience in systematic gender mainstreaming, women's empowerment, and sustainable development. Experience with gender issues in the specific country/region/sector of intervention is essential. Prior collaboration with UN projects is a strong asset. Experience in project development, results-based management, and capacity building with a gender focus is highly desirable. Excellent analytical, writing, advocacy, presentation, and communication skills are necessary.
