Community Volunteer Supervisor
Organizational Context
UNICEF's core mission is to advance children's rights globally, focusing on equity to ensure all children can survive, develop, and reach their full potential without discrimination. This commitment is vital for sustained national growth and stability. In The Gambia, UNICEF prioritizes immunization, addressing the challenge of approximately 14,000 "zero-dose" children, particularly in Western Region one and two, border communities, and vulnerable households facing access and data challenges.
Job Purpose
This role supports UNICEF's immunization program in The Gambia by supervising Community Volunteers to reduce the number of "zero-dose" children. The supervisor will ensure volunteers effectively reach targeted households through home visits and support immunization sessions. The assignment aims to strengthen demand for vaccination and improve coverage, particularly for children who have missed vaccinations. Volunteers will be deployed to health facilities based on factors like the number of zero-dose children and facility dropout rates, contributing directly to improving child health outcomes in challenging areas.
Responsibilities
The Community Volunteer Supervisor will provide technical guidance, oversight, and coordination for community-level immunization support. Key duties include mobilizing, supporting, and monitoring UNV Community Volunteers to ensure they effectively reach all households and strengthen vaccination demand. The supervisor will develop weekly and monthly work plans, aligning them with health facility outreach and national immunization priorities. Responsibilities also involve ensuring scheduled home visits to targeted households, coordinating volunteer participation in fixed-site and outreach immunization sessions, and supporting joint training initiatives with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF on immunization basics, communication, and data collection.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in community health, immunization programs, or volunteer coordination is required. Desirable experience includes supervision, data quality assurance, community engagement, strong interpersonal and mentorship skills, data analysis, problem-solving, and proficiency in local languages. Experience working in low-resource settings and a commitment to equity are also valuable.
Skills
Core competencies include accountability, adaptability, flexibility, creativity, judgment, decision-making, planning, organizing, professionalism, and self-management. Technical skills encompass health, information technology, and communication. The role requires strong interpersonal and communication abilities, cultural sensitivity, and the capacity to work effectively in challenging environments and diverse teams.
